LUMINOSA OSCURIDAD - Alejandra España
JULY 2021
The space contained in this exhibition, into which Alejandra España invites us to enter, is her personal myth or intimate cosmogony. In it, she deploys modules to give meaning to the visiting observer, a constant in her artistic work, through the configuration of maps or cartographies in which she leaves clues that serve as guides for consciousness to identify referents or signs, which are significant (imprint psychic) rather than meaning (mental image or thought). Hence, rhetoric is not necessary, since these signs live free of concept in the unconscious. In a subtle way, it deceives perception through symbolic play, allowing it to enter metacognitive and meta-psychological states, to go to the other side or “leave the cave”.
Alejandra España opens the door to the diversity of shapes and symbols that reside in her unconscious, the product of her personal and social evolution, and of the collective expressions shared throughout the world in myths and legends, memory of the primitive or primordial. She gives them free rein, allowing them to see the light and manifest on paper, on the loom, and in words. In her process, freedom is essential, insofar as it allows aesthetic and formal resources not to be influenced by preconceptions or impositions on the final result of the work. It allows surprise and astonishment during the process, in which the work reveals itself almost in a hypnotic or trance state. The artistic will is not based on her egoic self but on her shadow. It is not her person (mask) that speaks, but her transcendental being (true self), the one who pursues the truth, who keeps the secrets, and at the same time knows the path to liberation to become impersonal.
To admire her work it is necessary to penetrate deeper layers, into those remote spiritual, psychic, and sociological spaces where the form in each one of us is conceived. Alejandra España presupposes the development of her own language of forms through the creation of symbolic functionalism and allegories that elevate the work above the individual, turning it into a revelation of the sublime in a metaphysical and timeless representation. It is the work as a manifestation of internal reality. It seeks to give expression to the inexplicable and to the non-apprehensible with the senses; give freedom to magical intuitions and intimate conceptions.
Her free use of symbolic repetition is affirmation in the form of a magical incantation, which allows her to protect the sprawling existence of her inner landscape.
