CHERÁN ANAPÚ - Ángel Pahuamba
ENTRE DANZAS Y PUNTADAS
APRIL 2020
Like Gauguin in Tahiti, Ángel Pahuamba feels the need to go back beyond the horses of the Parthenon, to the rocking horse of his childhood. That spontaneity and simplicity is the only thing that is not learned, the quick and vigorous touches of color give the work a sense of frankness that is perceived in all of the artist's pieces. Despite Pahuamba's academic training, in his work, he frees himself from aspiring to an idealized ideal of beauty. Far from it, we often find malformations in his paintings and his value lies in his symbolic capacity, favoring color and emotional expression over reliable representation.
The artist is not submissive to his pictorial heritage, the carvings, embroidery, and iconography of the original peoples, especially Cherán, Michoacán, to which he belongs, are a fundamental part of the creator's work. There is in his works, however mischievous they may seem to a sophisticated spirit, something so powerful, simple, and spontaneous that he must be recognized as a master.
