NADA Miami 2024 Review: Pleasing if Placid Waters

The standout of the show came from Gonzalo García at CAM Galeria, whose paintings delve into the psychosexual realm of castration and draw from the 1973 Jorge Fons film “Los Cachorros” (based on the short story by Mario Vargas Llosa), about a dog attack that leaves a boy permanently disfigured. The inviting, warm-pastel palettes of Mr. García’s works belied their often unsettling imagery as man and canine interact in ways that can be viewed as either playful or aggressive. Swirls of limbs and paws come together in compositions with sources as varied as medieval paintings, Flemish Baroque pieces, bodegones and Mexican cinema from the 1970s.
