In the world of New York Art Fairs, Volta is one that could be categorized as “less stuffy” with its more approachable price points, newcomer galleries, and less air of pretension. It does not have the exclusivity of Frieze or TEFAF, but this can lead to a more welcoming environment that allows space to look at the art and ask questions. I attended the Volta Fair for the preview opening night, and thought I would share some impressions and a few of my favorite booths!
Volta opened its five-day event on Wednesday, May 17 at the Metropolitan Pavilion. The fair is focused on showcasing international galleries, which brings a nice opportunity to explore something outside of the scope of New York and save on some international shipping fees if you’re eyeing works from afar.
While some of the work I considered over-the-top, with the seeming intention of Instagram fodder, I did find some interesting curation and experimental options for the home.
Booth A5: CAM Galeria - Alejandra España, Daniel Berman, Mariu Palacios.

CAM is a gallery from Mexico City that features the work of contemporary Spanish-speaking artists. In this booth, I was most taken by Alejandra España’s fluorescent works in ink on paper. They were captivating both in technique and in composition, with ecstatic pattern and movement. I loved how the separate works formed a larger composition, and how the artist seemed to build her own world within her work. I also appreciated the resin sculptures that accompanied the drawings, the creatures in her private garden.
