Best of Miami Art Week 2024: 12 Highlights from Art Basel and Beyond

TOWN & COUNTRY

04 - Dec - 2024

The 22nd edition of the New Art Dealers Alliance fair, again at the Ice Palace Studios in downtown Miami, kicked off Tuesday, showcasing contemporary work presented by 150 galleries, art spaces and nonprofits hailing from some 66 cities around the world. There were strong statements from several fixtures in this space, including Miami’s own Nina Johnson and London’s Indigo+Madder, whose booth was part of the TD Bank-sponsored “Curated Spotlight” section—it featured paintings and sculptures by Noorain Inam derived from her residency at Porthmeor Studios in Cornwall. But Mexico City’s CAM Galeria was something of a showstopper with a series of unsettling bedroom scenes by Gonzalo Garcia titled “Cachorros” (Pups). In the images, a single figure is surrounded by dogs and disembodied hands. Is the person under attack or protection? Perhaps both. With bracing intimacy, the artist grapples with the natural tension, in the individual and in the culture at large, between power and agency, leaving the viewer to resolve for themselves the question of who retains ultimate control.
