DARTT Dallas

SEPTEMBER 2022

Humanity inevitably persists in the Platonic cave, still delighted by ancestral custom, with mere images of "the truth." But educating yourself through the plastic arts is not the same as educating yourself through imposed images, which we assume are true.

The inventory begins 32,000 years ago with the first cave paintings in the caves inhabited by primitive man, since then almost everything (tangible or intangible) has been painted or photographed, or so it seems. This same avidity of the plastic gaze changes the conditions of confinement in the cave, our world. By teaching us a new visual code, the arts alter and expand our notions of what is worth looking at and what we have a right to observe. They are a grammar and, above all, an ethics of vision.

Using a technique on paper, Alejandra España, Miguel Milló, Damián Lescas, Angel Pahuamba, and Nicolás Guzmán share their different visions of the world outside the cave. Five Mexican artists from different parts of the country through art.
